Activity: Create RESPECT

Objective:

to compare similar things

Materials:

(Optional)  1 discussion board  per whole group
(Optional)  1 package of discussion board markers  per whole group

Supporting Media:

Prep:

  • Gather materials.
  • Print supporting media document.

Instructions:

  1. Review the word RESPECT.  Review the rules in the room.  Ask the learners, "Why do we need rules?"
  2. Have the learners imagine a place where everyone respects all the rules.  The name of the place is called Utopia.  All of the people there take care of their things, all of the people are kind to animals, all of the people are polite and listened to each other, and all of the people follow all the rules of Utopia.
  3. Wait a minute for learners to try to imagine Utopia while they close their eyes.
  4. Then ask questions about Utopia.
  5. Learners can draw their ideas on the discussion board or act them out.
  6. Now have the learners imagine a place where no one respects the rules.  The name of the place is called Dystopia.  All of the people break and lose their things, all of the people are mean to animals, all of the people are rude and ignore each other, and all of the people break the rules of Dystopia.  
  7. Wait a minute for learners to try to imagine Dystopia while they close their eyes.
  8. Then ask questions about Dystopia.
  9. Learners can draw their ideas on the discussion board or act them out.
  10. Finally, ask the learners where they would rather live - in Utopia or Dystopia.  Allow learners to explain their reasoning.
